Ecology of agricultural landscapes, ecosystem functioning, food-web interactions, and biodiversity
I study the effects of landscape composition on the diet and physiological condition of lady beetles.

The landscape composition could affect lady beetles by creating variance in spatial and temporal availability of food. While landscapes that contain a high proportion of semi-natural habitat should provide food in a high quality and quantity throughout the foraging season, beetles might experience starving conditions in landscapes that are dominated by crop land, due to the periodically absence of habitat.
In 2011 I sampled adult lady beetles at locations across a gradient of agricultural intensification in southern Wisconsin and measured traits that are related to their physiological condition like body size, content of storage fat, flight muscle mass and wing load.
To test the effect of habitat diversity on the foraging behavior of lady beetles, specimens were sampled in prairies and soy bean fields in 2012. A DNA-based analysis of the gut contents of the collected beetles shall reveal differences in their microbial gut community and dietary range and will be realized with the help of the McMahon Lab.
