University of Wisconsin–Madison

Welcome to the UW-Madison Medical Entomology Lab (MEL) Mosquito site! This site is intended to be a resource about mosquitoes in Wisconsin, the diseases they may be carrying, and science-based information on methods to keep them from biting you.

2018 nuisance mosquito updates: Levels may increase over the next week or two.

2018 West Nile virus updates:  We have detected positive mosquitoes in both locations (Milwaukee area and Madison area) where we test pools of Culex mosquitoes.  The risk to humans is low but increasing.

Watch for the daytime biter Aedes albopictus, first detected in Wisconsin last year (see below-white line on thorax is a good clue).  If you catch one, get in touch as we are tracking the ways these may be introduced into Wisconsin.
